AAIM 2019

EAST is one of the most exciting instructional programs in Arkansas. EAST provides all learners the opportunity to have relevant, MISSION individualized, life-changing educational experiences. Library/EAST collaborations present unique opportunities not only to enhance EAST projects but helps to make libraries 21st-century spaces that provide learning and growth options for all students. Come learn about ways we have used library collaborations with EAST to enhance students learning. Examples of collaborative projects will be shared and ideas will be provided to help you collaborate with your EAST program.

This presentation will allow a view into the experience of the history department head and library media specialist at Bentonville, Arkansas, in their journey that began with a library museum and developed into many projects, including school wide programs and National History Day research, preparation and competition.

Meg will discuss using books and story time to integrate with the character education guidelines of your curriculum and statewide goals. A former trainer for the CHARACTERCOUNTS! community programs, Meg also taught for 10 years in a school that integrated character education into every subject and will pull from the lessons used during those years. Specific books focusing on different character qualities (pillars) and lesson ideas will be shared, including methods to involve families at home. Meets R.I.S.E. Goal 1: Sharpen the focus and strengthen instruction and Goal 2: Create community collaboration.

Using historical artifacts and art in a lesson can grab your students and create an opportunity for critical thinking. The Arkansas Declaration of Learning (ADOL) is an intensive summer training opportunity that focuses on object-based learning leading to civic engagement. This session will provide a glimpse into the program and offer some of the strategies & resources introduced in the ADOL training.

Take a step into your library and view it through the eyes of your students. What do you see? Do you want to pick up every books you see? Is it hard to narrow down your choices for checkout or do the shelves leave you feeling a little unmotivated to checkout? Where do you even start weeding? Get an overview of collection analysis, weeding reports and collection development and hear how one librarian tackled weeding head on.

Do you want your students to think outside of the box and become global learners? There’s a standard for that. What about being creators of information and not just consumers? There’s a standard for that. Do you want your students to think, create, share, and grow all while utilizing the school library and its resources? There’s a standard for that.
This session will break down the AASL National School Library Standards in a way that provides concrete examples. We will take time to look at your current lesson plans and crosswalk the frameworks used with the AASL NSLS.
Goal 1: Sharpen the focus and strengthen instruction.

This session will introduce the participants to the new Arkansas Learning Standards for School Libraries. Resources and strategies for unpacking the standards will be provided.

Today's students will be citizens of the world more than any generation before them. They live in an age of instant, world-wide communication. After graduation, many will be employed by internationally based companies and will work and live side-by-side with people from all over the world. So, learning about other people and their cultures is a vital part of their education. The Cultural Kaleidoscope can help prepare students to be effective citizens in the global community. Our programs introduce students to the cultures through authentic music, dance, history, geography, language, art and cultural traditions. Teaching Resource Guides are provided to the schools.
